Orcas Island Guest House

Our most challenging collaboration during the design of the Orcas Island Guest house and Workshop was with the site itself, a lush, wooded hillside with a view of the water and an abundance of trees. The Guest house and Workshop are literally made from the site; trees formerly located on the building site were milled by the clients for use as wood siding and framing. Taking cues from the vernacular of nearby island barn structures and working closely with local craftsmen, the buildings emerged as simple, elegant structures residing on a hillside meadow. The Guest house features a light-filled open living space, a sleeping loft, a galley kitchen and an office. The Workshop houses a number of functional uses including a wood shop, a covered outdoor work space, a fish cleaning station and ample storage for motor boats, kayaks and outdoor sporting equipment.
